WOMEN’S HANDBAGS REVEAL THEIR TRUE ‘PURSE-ONALITIES’

There’s a new way of uncovering a woman’s true personality (and it doesn’t involve looking into her eyes... or her past) – it involves a peek into what she carries around in the inner recesses of her handbag or purse!

The bits and pieces contained in a woman’s handbag reveal more about her personality, her lifestyle and who she is than months of detective work.   Be warned however, it takes a brave person to venture into those depths – there is a possible risk of attack from a miniature poodle (a la Paris Hilton), uncovering some secret beauty treatment or retrieving a six-week old apple – but if you give it a go, you just may uncover more than you ever imagined!.    

Of course, the old staples are still there (cosmetics, keys, tissues, hair brushes, leather wallets etc), but the information age has brought a brand new element – that of gadgetry (including mobile phones, MP3 players, i-pods and even notebook computers).   How times have changed since the ration books, gloves and cigarettes of the forties handbags or the bulky filofaxes of the eighties.   A quick search of some celebrity handbags in Australia revealed everyday items like mobile phones, lip balm and keys as well as some more unusual (and revealing) items including bras and dog’s clothes!. 

And it’s obviously that what’s inside a bag is as important as what’s on the outside.  Handbag analysis reveals 40 different personality types – according to Australian born author, Kathryn Eisman, who spent two years researching her book, ‘How To Tell a Woman by Her Handbag’.   It’s all about the colour, size and shape as well as the materials a handbag is made from – be it a leather handbag, a fashion bag, designer bags, elegant purses – bright, eye-catching colours to muted, classic neutrals.... it’s literally a mixed bag!.

She also says a peek inside a woman’s handbag is a peek inside her soul.  Eisman categorises ‘bag ladies’ into four main types according to the contents of their accessories, namely expressive, prepared, minimal and creative.

And with changing fashions – and rapidly evolving technology – many women are lightening their loads.  Research from British department store, Debenhams reveals that even handbags are losing weight – at 57% down from an average of 3.5 kgs in 2006 to only 1.5kgs in 2009.  Slimmed down mobile phones, predominantly iPhones and Blackberries have replaced the laptops, filofaxes and PDAs of yesteryear.   And fashions have also dictated change, with oversized totes making way for elegant purses, clutch bags, slimline evening bags and even pared down travel bags.  

But less does not mean less value apparently.  The average value of the contents of a woman’s handbag is around $220 dollars according to one study – comprising mainly cosmetics, leather wallets, cash and a mobile phone 

Wouldn’t you like to get a grip on who you really are by delving into the depths of your own handbag?.  Maybe get the girls around and have a handbag hangout – put the contents on the table and see if you can match the personalities.  Whether they’re into oversized totes which contain everything including the kitchen sink or elegant evening bags with only a designer lipstick and a credit card – it’s bound to be an event that is bags of fun
